Video Wealth Health Tip 02 - Denial

John Buerger, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional and Wealth Coach from ALTUS Wealth Solutions in San Luis Obispo, CA presents the most important Wealth Health Tip - "Consume less than your produce (spend less than you make). That's It.
That's a Big "Duh."  Everybody knows this, right (or at least they should)? A theme of these videos is to state the obvious, but re-framed in ways you can actually use to your advantage.
A sea-change in your behavior is needed ... but that won't happen by me telling you what to do (a mistake most advisors make). You already know what to do. My job is to help you find a way to actually do it.
Let's look at this personal finance tip -- Spend Less than U make. We all KNOW this is true and yet very few people do it. Why? It's really quite natural -- you're hardwired that way. Spending money FEELS GOOD. Saving money is PAINFUL
Your brain is faced with a choice - "Spend money now" (party time, fun) or "Save for the future" (yuch). Your brain picks party time, immediate gratification almost every time.
But what if saving money wasn't painful?
We're not talking budget here. Budget is a 6-letter 4-letter word. What if you could actually spend MORE on the things that are important to you and pay for it by spending less on the stuff that doesn't matter?
You CAN -- and it starts with being aware of EVERY DOLLAR you are spending. For the next week, with every purchase you make, ask "is this important to me?" Also remember that a dollar spent in one place can't be spent someplace else (which might be really important).
Give it a shot and see how this does for you.
I'm John Buerger reminding you ...
Get Control Over Your Money BEFORE it Takes Control of Your Life.

We're going to start this week's Video Wealth Tip with a story. It's the story of a Wintertime trip ... and you're in it. In fact you get to choose the destination but it has to be a place that is really important to you.

It could be with family or with friends. It could be a ski trip or (since this is a Wintertime story) an escape to warmer climate …

Wherever it is and whomever you're with – it has to make you feel really good inside to be there. It also has to be some good distance from where you are – you can't walk or bike there.

In fact, there are only two routes that will get you to this ideal destination – (1) over a snowy mountain pass or (2) along a long, winding coastal route around the mountain.

Which route are you going to take?

That depends on the car you're driving? If you're in a snazzy expensive sports car – you might want to take the winding road. It may be longer but it is a lot more fun to drive and who wants to drive a snazzy expensive sports car in the snow.

However if what you have is a pick-up, the moutain pass might be the perfect alternative.

If you choose the mountain pass – when would you like to find out whether you have four wheel drive that works and/or snow tires or chains?   Sooner is better than later and before you leave would be best. You don't want to get on the side of the mountain slip sliding around and wind up buried in a snow drift ... or worse.

When I think of all the reasons why most people don't enjoy better financial results the #1 reason is ignoring their current financial reality – no idea what kind of car their driving, how well it runs, what it can do or what it CAN'T do. They just get behind the wheel of whatever financial car is in the driveway and start driving - often with no destination in mind.

Not only that, but they're afraid to find out. I can understand that – they fear that what they have is really a beat up old pick-up truck when they really want that snazzy expensive sports car.

The reality is that in the next year or two we're going to have another economic blizzard - that's just how things work - and that pick up truck might be exactly what you need to navigate the storm.

We do a service called the Wealth Health Check-up. It's a one-shot, fee-for-service, single meeting, complete financial review. It's your current financial reality. And while it takes people a long time to get into the process and come to the meeting (because of all the fear associated with learning their current reality), once they go through it they always say, "I'm in much better shape than I feared I was."

TIP - Find out what your current financial reality is. What kind of financial car are YOU driving? Learn about it. Embrace it - the good, the bad and the ugly. Work with it and you'll get much better results than wishing you had something that you don't.

I'm John Buerger reminding you …
