My Journey As a Life Insurance Advisor

When I first decided to become a financial planner (2002), I got a life insurance license. That way, I could feed my family while I pursued the 2+ years of study required to sit for the CFP® exam.

Once I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, I aimed to let my life insurance agent license lapse. Selling life insurance comes with conflicts of interest and disclosure requirements. I wanted to be a “fee-only” financial planner.

The Downside to Using Third Party Agents

Several times over the past 15+ years I’ve referred financial planning clients to other agents for their life insurance. In EVERY instance, the agents attempted (and sometimes succeeded) to sell my clients a policy that was different than the one I prescribed. Why? Doing so usually made them more money. Sometimes, they just didn’t understand the client’s financial plan.

So now I am a “fee-based” financial planner who still maintains his life insurance license. That way I can be sure that the insurance you are buying is a good fit with your financial plan, your resources and your goals & values. Therefore, I DO make a commission on the life insurance I sell. However, I also try very hard to not let that get in the way of helping you find the best life insurance for your needs.
